bio

Born in 1990 in Kurgan, Russia. Masha Pangilinan is a Russian-Filipino artist, based in Paris, who creates visual narratives that are an exploration of paradise, a place beyond space and time. Оbtained her art education at the Moscow Academy of Fine Arts named after V. Surikov in 2013. After moving to Paris in 2014, the artist began experimenting with inventing her own artistic language and the creation of her world. In 2020 she joins POUSH art center, where she works on her new projects.

In her work she constantly challenges the place of the reified body in the history of art, through her unique artistic vision. In reaction to the academic path, Pangilinan's art constantly questions conformity and conservatism, reflecting the conflict encapsulated in the famous question asked by the Guerrilla girls; "Do women have to be naked to enter the Metropolitan Museum?"

Her work is a reaction to the pervasive male gaze that has dominated the history of art. The masculine figures that populate her works are highlighted and eroticized, making male nudity a subject of beauty and contemplation. Her depiction of the male figure captures the beauty and sensuality of the male form, while challenging traditional gender roles and inviting new interpretations of gender representation in art.

This is a fictional universe inspired from the paradisiacal imagery found in abrahamic religions, blending influences from classical and modern painting, filled with abundant flora reminiscent of Rousseau, classic perspectives reminiscent of De Chirico, and swimming pools reminiscent of Hockney.

Through the use of her unique artistic language, and a renewed and original interpretation of paradisiacal concepts, Pangilinan's paintings offer us an insight into the eternal realm of paradise, transgressing classical barriers of genre and style. The result is a particular visual language that challenges the viewer’s prspective.
